6 Mar 06 MAD Various things may fail at times today (at the moment webmail does not work, for instance). This is because I upgraded this server (redlance) across major versions of FreeBSD yesterday, which means all its packages have to be rebuilt. This is taking quite a long time.
20 Feb 06 MAD The move was done as planned and the computers are running in their new "permanent" home.
17 Feb 06 MAD I have got the final information I needed from the ISP and will be moving the servers on Monday. That means all of my sites, including this one, will be down most of Monday. If things go well, they should be back up and available by Monday night. Because the downtime will be longer than 4 hours, people that send you email Monday morning might receive warning messages saying that their messages have not been delivered. The mail should not bounce though. It will be queued on a backup spool and delivered when the main servers are back up.
29 Jan 06 MAD It appears that the DNS server stopped working on Friday after I left, and it has taken until now for me to find a way to get on the Internet in this town. The DNS server is a very minor thing but it would not have seemed like it, because it would have looked like everything was down. I still don't know what caused it, but I have transferred the DNS to a backup server in the meantime.
22 Jan 06 MAD although I will be moving next week, the servers will not, because there is no hope of having a new DSL working at that time. So the inevitable downtime is still inevitable, but it won't be for a while yet, possibly a couple of months.
20 Jan 06 MAD installed a new UPS, upgraded the firewall/router whilst trying to prepare for the day when I have to move all this stuff and figure out how to set it up again on the other end. This would have meant intermittent random site failures between about 1 and 3am this morning, for those that are keeping score at home.
23 Dec 05 MAD photoprism.net is down. Its UPS crapped out less than a day after I left town, which sucks because there is nothing I can do about it until I get back next week. Sorry about that. I wanted to use it, too.
21 Dec 05 MAD I will be in Connecticut from December 22-30. The only reliable way to reach me during this time will be the cell phone. Also, I will be moving near the end of January, which is sure to mean some downtime for all of my sites, including this one. I don't yet know when or how long this will be, but hopefully only a day or so.
10 Nov 05 MAD Anonymized proxy Web browsing is now available to singingtree people. You must use a special login and password to get it. Details should be in your email shortly.
16 Oct 05 MAD The DSL was down from about 1:30 to 3:00am this morning, because of an LA-area service outage. Hopefully you did not notice.
21 Sep 05 MAD Some accounts expired today, so if you can't log in, let me know. (The first day of fall is tomorrow, but I apparently didn't know this when I set the expiration dates.)
16 Jun 05 MAD I have been told that the ISP is going to perform "emergency maintenance" on an upstream circuit tonight, so the site may be disconnected between 1 and 3am.
6 Sep 05 MAD You must watch this:
Fox News: Hannity and Colmes, 2 Sep 2005
That's right, Fox News. Hannity and Colmes featuring Geraldo Rivera. I wouldn't usually watch this crap if you paid me. Which is why I am dumbfounded by this tape. Because you know that if there was any credibility whatsoever to the bullshit excuses being handed out by the federal government, if the president's spin was offering even the tiniest fig leaf of cover, these people on Fox News are the ones that would be spinning it. They can't. Geraldo Rivera is holding an 18 month old baby, crying, and yelling at Sean Hannity to "let these people the hell out".
21 Jun 05 MAD With the beginning of summer another batch of accounts has expired. Please let me know if you are locked out.
29 Apr 05 MAD The installation of the dedicated DSL is complete, so the site should be faster and more reliable from now on. Unless I move next month, of course.
24 Apr 05 MAD I am trying to assemble a portfolio of sorts out of my thousands of mostly not very good photographs. If you have about one minute to help me do this, please go here.
21 Apr 05 MAD The ISP tells me that the dedicated DSL loop is going to be installed today. This supposedly won't interrupt my service but we've all heard that one before. If the site disappears some time today, you will at least know that I am home, I know about the problem, and am working on it.
15 Apr 05 MAD Sorry about the DSL failure. Speakeasy was on the phone with me for about an hour and determined that the problem is the noise margin on the Verizon line. I have ordered a dedicated line which is supposed to be better. In the meantime, we have sacrificed some downstream bandwidth (which you won't notice, only I will) in order to run error correction on the existing line. The point is, it shouldn't happen again. Any email that was sent to you during the outage was delivered to a backup mail server, and will be forwarded to your mailbox in the next few hours.
15 Nov 04 MAD I am in Las Vegas at Apachecon US. We have arranged live streaming video on LPBN. This was a huge amount of trouble so look at it if you can.
22 Sep 04 MAD Happy fall and I hope you like the new site layout. For now, the new photoprism display box is only pulling images from my collection. With the permission of the other photoprism customers, it will soon pull images from everyone.
21 Sep 04 MAD Many accounts expired today, so if you suddenly can't log in, this is probably why. Please send me an email and I will set your expiration date back.
