One wrist down...

We had an intramural Ultimate game last night (I play with my ward). The team we were playing was very fast and very tall. So we had a pretty strong disadvantage to start. I was playing deep safety when one of their guys came sprinting down for a long throw. The disc was in the air and were both sprinting full speed. Knowing he has the height advantage I jump a little early hoping to get a block before it gets by us, at which point I'd be able to do nothing to stop him. My jumping caused him to jump early as well, so we both missed it, which is fine with me. The problem came after I swiped at the disc and missed. It was at this point that I looked down and realized that due to jumping really high amid a fast sprint I had ended up much more horizontal than I wanted to be. So when I looked down I found it odd that my feet were not anywhere near being underneath my torso. I know that I'm going to hit hard, and I know I should just take the fall with my body. But reflexes are reflexes and I found my arms out in front of me. I landed HARD on my right wrist, and it made some noises that it probably shouldn't have, and I couldn't move it very much. So I called an injury, and subbed out. Now I can't move it very far without intense pain. My first Ultimate injury, and it looks like I hurt my wrist typing or something.... lame.

I'll probably go see a doctor later today after classes, because that would be the responsible thing to do. My guess is that I sprained it bad. Hopefully it's nothing worse than that.

Did I ever tell you the one about...

So I am the lead developer for the Open-Source project (hosted on sourceforge) called Aviones. It is the cumulative effort of many a grad student, and has fallen into my hands in a fairly random fashion. Oddly, I think my attachment to it will almost guarantee me acceptance as a grad student, because they need me to look after it, in a way.

So anyways, I got an email from a guy in New Zealand the other day. He was having some problems, so I helped him get the program running properly. In his second email he says:
----
thanks heaps, we're working our way through Brian L. Stevens and Frank L.
Lewis's "Aircraft Control and Simulation, 2nd Edition" book and enjoying
your implementation of the physics for an aircraft.
----

Wow, someone uses this thing besides us (the MAGICC and HCMI labs). I was sort of blown away that someone in New Zealand was using our software. Software that I have dug through, understood, changed, improved, and coded. And the 'we' suggest it's a class or something... just crazy... but somehow made me feel warm and fuzzy inside....

Personal Philosophy

So I've just discovered that Democritus held the same personal philosophy about life as I do:

"He who intends to enjoy life should not be busy about many things, and in what he does should not undertake what exceeds his natural capacity. On the contrary, he should have himself so in hand that even when fortune comes his way, and is apparently ready to lead him on to higher things, he should put her aside and not o'erreach his powers. For a being of moderate size is safer than one that bulks too big."

How about that... Silly Greeks.

So the start of the semester is evident in my lack of posts....

For those that asked, here's a quick synopsis of the bum story:

Steve B. went to Arizona to visit family for a few weeks. Josh, Allie, Abbey, Christine and I went down to Las Vegas for a vacation before classes started again. The night we got there, at about 12:30am MST (Provo) (11:30pm PST - Vegas), I got a phone call from Steve E. He says, "Hey, I just got home and there's some guy sleeping in Josh's bed." I didn't really know how to react... Before we left for Vegas we had noticed a dingy/dirty sheet on Josh's bed (Josh had previously removed his own bedding), and a grocery bag of clothes on the floor. We thought it was odd, but didn't have time to worry about it as we were leaving. Steve couldn't get ahold of the managers to find out what the deal with this guy was, so we started trying to find numbers of people we could call. So this guy is like 43 years old, and extremely socially awkward, he's just not all there in the head, very sketchy. After some quick thinking I managed to get ahold of Dave (the complex owner) (~1:00am Provo), he seemed to be coherent, so I don't think I woke him up.... anyways. He says he just found out about the guy the day before, and didn't know what the previous manager had been thinking when she sold him a contract. He claimed to be a BYU student, so she sold him a contract apparently. Dave didn't like the look of the guy and didn't want the guy ruining the student atmosphere of the apartment complex. So he said he was going to be double-checking with BYU, and going to have a friend run a background-check on the guy the next day.

Assured something was being done, I then tried to call Steve back. But someone else answered his cell phone! It was a voice I didn't recognize, but claimed to be Craig from apt 21, like I'm going to take his word for it at this point, for all I know Steve is dead in the bathtub.... So I tell him to have Steve call me. Eventually Steve calls (he had Craig come down, and then took a shower). And then they slept on the couches with knives close at hand. The next day the guy got up and left apparently without incident.

Later that day Steve calls to say that the police are coming to take the guy away that evening. After I got back I found out that Dave had found out that the guy was not a BYU student, nor was he applying, as he had claimed after being found out he wasn't a student. So Dave had him evicted for lying on the contract. The Police came and officially evicted him from the apartment and made sure he left the premises. Further investigation found that he used to live here at Belmont Apartments 20 years ago when he WAS a student! Apparently he liked it so much he didn't want to leave.....

Anyways, he's gone... and good riddance, he was weird. I had actually met him the day before helping the new manager move in, and boy was he messed up... didn't fully understand the concept of picking up boxes from the truck and carrying them upstairs to the manager's apartment....

Ok, so that wasn't exactly quick....

Other things:

A.
Beginning of the week was really rough, I stalled out on a bunch of projects I've been working on, and ended up a little depressed because of it. But I made some progress the past two days (including finishing my Artificial Intelligence lab). I'm actually keeping up with my schoolwork into the 2nd week, it's sweet.

B.
I've recently seen lots of old friends from last winter that are back in town. Some newly engaged, some not. It is really nice to see old friends and catch up on how they're doing.

C.
The ward put together an intramural Ultimate team. We had our first game yesterday, and got stomped. we're in the upper division because there wasn't any space in the lower division. Most people have never played organized Ultimate before. I've sort of become the de facto coach, since I have the most experience. I enjoyed our first game, afterwards I did some teaching, and then we played another team for fun, and we looked ALOT better. We have some good potential.

D.
I need to apply for April graduation soon. And I need to apply for the Master's program soon as well....

Anjuta Crash when opening File

In case any person in the universe happens to have an issue with Anjuta crashing when you open a specific file here is my story.

I had a .c file that would crash Anjuta whenever I tried to view it. The problem is that some character in the file makes the editor die. So my fix was to open the file in Scite, and then open a new file in Anjuta. I then did a copy & paste from Scite to Anjuta and overwrote the original file from Anjuta. It now works fine.

Update on Life

Ok, so I'll give a brief update on my life since the last post.

My younger sisters are all moved into their housing. Megan at BYU-I and Mollie here at BYU. I had all sorts of fun trying to help get their technological stuff set up over the phone.....

My nephew is walking around some now. He's really cute and funny, a very lively child, always wandering off to trash something.

The mindset of summer is officially over now that classes have started. I had to get up at 7 am today for my 8 am Introduction to Artificial Intelligence class. As I stated to a roommate this morning, any intelligence I exhibit at 8 am is artificial.

I had a good weekend, now I just have to remember what it involved. A lot of hanging out with people, not necessarily doing anything, just enjoying our existence. Christine leaves for London today, and Abbey leaves for Morocco tomorrow, so our group is dispersing a bit. Josh has moved to his new condo with Brady, so that's a difference in the apartment. We have 3 new roommates, one of whom is my roommate from Freshman year.

A girl, Natalie, from my home ward happened to move into my apartment complex, and ward. What're the chances of that?

Sunday was church as usual, but with basically an entire new ward, there's only about 25 people that stayed in the ward. I spent the time writing in my journal as I often do during church now, since I find it much more interesting than whatever the unprepared teacher is droning about.

Yesterday I got up and played Tennis with Josh, Dan, and Dan's brother. Josh and Dan's brother beat Dan and I in a doubles set 6-3. But it was fun, and we should do it more often. I then took a shower, and Josh gave me another excellent haircut. After which I rushed over to Jessica's (I have still forgotten to ask whether she goes by Jess or Jessica, if you read this, feel free to let me know.) to eat waffles, yum. Then I spent an hour and a half or so getting her cable modem to cooperate with her wireless router. After a quick call to Brady to confirm my suspicion of the underlying problem I figured it out and it now works. Then I rushed back home to hop on a trip up to the South Town Mall in Sandy. I bought a sweet jacket at Express and a graphic Tee at American Eagle. I then came back home, and went back over to Jessica's where we made cupcakes and chocolate covered strawberries (both of which were awesome). And then after much indecision tried to go to Thai Ruby, which was closed, and after much more indecision, went to Ottavio's. Discovering that our sisters lived in the same complex at BYU-I we sent them text messages to go meet each other and become friends. By the end of dinner some combination of the foods I had eaten throughout the day was not working well and my stomach was not happy. It was shortly after returning home that I sadly noticed that during the course of the evening the hood pull on my new jacket had become no longer attached sad . At this point I was exhausted, not feeling great, and not happy about the jacket, so I went to bed. Since Express for Men is at South Town Mall, I would have to go all the way up there (like 30 - 45 min) to get this taken care of.... Josh said he'll talk the people from Express in the University Mall since they're usually in the bank for work. Hopefully they can set it up for me to return the jacket there and have a replacement sent down from the Express for Men. That would be really nice, cause I really like that jacket.

And now I'm sitting at work.....
